Birdie

Date

August 2025 - Forever

Birdie came from one of the most heartbreaking situations I’ve ever seen—she was living in a chicken coop, terrified and completely shut down. When we rescued her, she wouldn’t walk outside, wouldn’t go to the bathroom outdoors, and spent the first three weeks curled up in her crate, too scared to move.

But little by little, Birdie began to make progress. With lots of patience, gentle encouragement, and a calm environment, she started to trust. Every small moment—stepping outside, sniffing the breeze, or letting her tail wag—was a major win. We worked through her fears delicately and on her terms.

That summer, she came home with me to meet my family dogs, and the most beautiful bond began to blossom between Birdie and Charlie, our other rescue girl. Watching them build a friendship has been one of the most rewarding parts of Birdie’s journey. Charlie’s calm and confident nature helped guide Birdie toward feeling safe and secure.

We’re still working through things, but Birdie was one of those fosters we just couldn’t let go of. She’s a proud foster fail and an even prouder part of our family. Seeing how far she’s come is a daily reminder of the power of love, patience, and second chances.
