Ruffles

Date

February 2026

Location

St. George, Grenada

Ruffle’s story began when the Grenada GSPCA received a call about a severely neglected dog and a possible abuse case. The GSPCA asked Esteban and me to drive out and check on the situation. We drove over an hour not fully knowing what we were about to find, but nothing could have prepared me for the condition Ruffle was in.

He was chained to a cement block on the concrete, completely hairless, covered in sores, and severely emaciated. When I first saw him, I genuinely thought he was dead. His body was limp in my arms, his gums were completely white, and he barely had the strength to move. It was obvious he had been suffering for a very long time.

At first, the owner was hesitant about letting him go. But after talking with her and explaining how critical his condition was, she agreed to allow me to take him for veterinary care and treatment through the GSPCA. We immediately rushed him back for emergency medical attention.

When Ruffle arrived at the shelter, his condition was critical. His PCV was only 15%, and he tested positive for tick-borne illness. He was severely malnourished, weak, and physically exhausted.

But despite everything he had endured, Ruffle kept fighting.

Over the following months, his transformation was incredible to witness. Slowly, his skin began healing, his hair started growing back, and his personality finally began to shine through. The dog who once looked lifeless now runs to greet people, enjoys full meals, and experiences the comfort and care every dog deserves.

Ruffle’s story is one I will never forget because it reminds me why rescue work matters so deeply. Sometimes all it takes is one phone call, one car ride, and one chance for an animal’s entire life to change.

Today, Ruffle is thriving at the shelter surrounded by people who love and care for him, and his recovery has been nothing short of incredible.
