My veterinary journey took me to the heart of Africa, where I had the incredible opportunity to contribute to some of the most important wildlife conservation efforts. My experience started in Johannesburg, South Africa, and took me on an adventure across the country, from Port Elizabeth to Plettenberg Bay.
In Africa, I had the privilege of working alongside wildlife experts in various settings. One of the most exciting tasks I was involved in was placing tracking units into rhino horns using helicopters. This cutting-edge technology helps protect rhinos by monitoring their movements and ensuring their safety from poaching. It was an unforgettable experience, combining veterinary skills with high-tech conservation methods.
I also worked with cheetahs, performing castrations to prevent inbreeding within wildlife reserves. This is essential for maintaining genetic diversity and supporting the long-term health of the species. In addition to this, I was involved in vaccinating cheetahs and zebras to prevent the spread of diseases and ensure the health of these amazing animals.
One of the most rewarding parts of my time in Africa was helping relocate lions to new reserves to enhance their chances of thriving in a safe and suitable environment. I also had the rare opportunity to assist in nail trims for lions whose claws had grown into their paw pads— a delicate procedure that required precision and care to ensure the lions' comfort.
Through these experiences, I learned not only the technical skills of veterinary medicine but also the importance of conservation and working in such dynamic and challenging environments. My time in Africa reaffirmed my commitment to wildlife protection and the vital role veterinarians play in preserving endangered species.
